Teachers' Day of Professional Development
September is a busy season, but also a harvest season. On September 30, all teachers of Wesley School Binjiang Campus devoted themselves to studying and developing their teaching skills and knowledge with the heart of humble students. They inquired into "Teaching and Learning" through different angles of professional training to promote the growth of the teachers’ professional abilities.
What is Inquiry Learning?
The workshop titled, “Inquiry learning" led by Principal Jessie began the PD.

Under the professional guidance of Principal Jessie, three lines of inquiry were explored:
1 Exploring our personal definitions of Inquiry
  2. Deconstructing a learning engagement
3 Planning through the lens of the inquiry cycle
Teachers also acted as students as they actively discussed, constantly updated their cognition, and collected information in different ways. Based on the central idea and lines of inquiry, they divided into groups to show the diversity of learning from multiple perspectives and worked collaboratively.

Through the teacher development training, we had the opportunity to once again usher in Principal Jessie’s close friend, Mr Bliss, who is an expert in the field with many years of experience in IB curriculum development, to share and impart his wisdom to us all. By using real case studies, he led us to explore methods of guiding inquiry and assessment, enlighten the minds of teachers, broaden our vision of learning and teaching, and also allow us to walk more sure-footed along the road of life-long learning as prescribed by the IB.

Play Based Learning
Effective Assessment
For children’s projects, assessment is not the end, but the beginning. Assessment can occur at any time during IB PYP learning.
The early years environment plays a particularly important role in children's learning and development. The environment is the place that children will remember for the rest of their lives, is personalized and serves as a comfortable shelter for them. It is sensual, full of exploration, choice and freedom. In order to create an attractive and developmentally appropriate learning environment, it is critical to assess and observe each child’s development, learning experiences and interests.
For the second half of the training, IB PYP Coordinator & Deputy Principal Stacy Jin led teachers to inquire into and discuss assessment further. During the training, she led the teachers to use various assessment methods to allow teachers to experience, participate in and evaluate activities by playing games and simulating real situations.

The day’s training was diverse. Teacher Samuel, a K1 homeroom teacher, also led the teachers on a journey of "Play Based Learning". Teachers had a good time deepening their understanding of play based learning by playing themselves. In order to let children better understand and expand their own play, we as teachers should first explore how we explore and play.

IB Asia-Pacific Workshop
IB training never stops for PYP educators and is ongoing at Wesley School. After the teacher development training at the campus, a team of teachers were sent out to attend the IB official learning workshop held on October 5-7 in Shanghai Xihua Foreign Children's School. The teachers came back to Wesley more confident that ever with a plethora of IB knowledge.

Reflection
  Teacher Nelly:
Teacher professional development training is an effective method for teachers build teacher’s professional "drive", and it is necessary for teachers to continue to improve themselves during their career. Teachers make up the ‘soul’ of the school in terms of the values and beliefs we aim to impart to our students. As such, the top priority of Wesley School is to promote teachers' professional development, utilize the advantages and strengths of teachers’ professional self-development, enhance teachers' self-esteem and self-confidence, arouse teachers' work ethic, improve teachers' well-being and sense of self-efficacy in order for all teachers, and therefore their students, to be the best they can be.
  Teacher Andrew:
With participants at various levels of teaching experience and understanding of IB, the first goal of the class was to clarify the meaning and intentions of the International Baccalaureate. Once we were able to have a better understanding, we moved toward our goal of how to implement a transdisciplinary, concept based learning curriculum. We discussed the differences between topics: “public places” and the IB concepts: form, function, causation, change, connection, perspective, and responsibility; which then allows us to create an inquiry based central idea: “public places serve many purposes and it’s our responsibility to take care of them.”
We can then began to better understand the role of concepts as knowledge, which if understood will stay cemented in the brain forever; while, just knowing something will be forgotten. We played a game, using an idea that a seventh grade class used; playing the apprentice. This activity helped us understand the role of prejudices and bias, in terms of hiring an employee out of seven options; based on just what was supplied: first names, then photos, description then finally qualifications. I will remember the impact this activity, and much of the professional development has made on my understanding and attachment to the IB school.
  Teacher Demi:
After this IB training, I understand better that IB.PYP inquiry program emphasizes that inquiry should be based on questions and learned through the model of designed PYP six trans-disciplinary themes activities, which are aimed to develop kids’ integrated ability. During their inquiry, the kids develop their understanding of the concepts of knowledge, promote their mastery of skills, sustain their positive attitude towards the development of the world and form their ability to take actions.
  Teacher Eric:
We have learned so much about IB in the last month and a half and for me a lot of it has gotten lost in the shuffle.  This course was a great chance to learn some things and help clarify some of the things that I am currently doing.
One more thing that was greatly clarified for me was the concept based learning and specifically how it is used in the development of our transdisciplinary themes.  I think this clarity will help me create a better more complete UOI next time.
