The IB PYP Inquiry Curriculum – Play-based Learning
Wesley School has adopted an IB PYP (International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program) inquiry curriculum. Content is rooted in the local characteristics of Hangzhou in order to engage children’s interest and enhance their learning experiences. The inquiry curriculum emphasizes student participation and engagement, promoting their involvement in the learning process. Learning is focused on finding solutions to problems rather than on memorizing correct answers and encourages discovery through play and creative activities. Inquiry learning covers the five areas of learning: who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, and how we share the planet. Inquiry learning is proven to enhance students’ self-management skills, ways of thinking, research techniques, communication skills and social competence. This approach promotes such invaluable traits as curiosity, self-confidence, concentration, creativity and reflection. Wesley School children also acquire agency, because they are encouraged to use their own initiative and to take responsibility and ownership of their learning. They will become inquirers, thinkers, and communicators—individuals who are open-minded, risk-taking, principled, caring, reflective, knowledgeable, balanced and globally minded. The active learning style helps maintain students’ enthusiasm for learning and encourages them to be honest and trustworthy, to care for others, to respect school guidelines and to respond to a changing world. The IB PYP curriculum fosters lifelong learning ability in children.
